Ergonomic Chair

Setting up your chair

Just because a chair is labelled ergonomic, doesn't always mean it is going to be right for you. A range of factors need to be considered and the chair should be chosen to suit the individual.

Factors to consider include:

Adjustability - The more adjustable the chair, the more likely you are to be able to suit the chair to the person. Ensure you can adjust seat height, back rest and seat pan depth.

When sitting in the chair, you should be able to have your bottom into the back of the chair, with your back against the back rest. The seat pan should not restrict your legs or dig into the back of your thighs. Hips and knees should be at an angle of approximately 90 degrees. Feet should be flat on the floor - if they do not reach, a footrest may be required.

Arm rests - You should be able to move these up and down, or remove altogether. It is important that the chair can be moved close in to the desk and the armrests are not inhibiting this. Arm rest height should be set at a level where your arms can rest with elbows at 90 degrees and forearms flat and level. Shoulders should be relaxed and not hunched.

Lumbar support - The chair should provide support for the curve of the lower back, often the height of this needs adjusting to fit the individual. If there is no specific lumbar support on the chair, a lumbar roll cushion may be used to provide support instead.

Stability - The chair should be stable, a 5 point base is best. Consider whether you need to be able to move the chair and if casters are necessary or a fixed base more appropriate. If the chair has casters, ensure they are appropriate for the floor surface.

As a final note… even when you have your chair set up perfectly, this doesn't mean you should sit in it for hours on end! Get up regularly to vary your position. Have a walk and do some stretches. Getting up once every hour or two is a good guide, and take a break from sitting at lunch time – have a walk.
