Ergonomic Office Posture

Using proper ergonomic posture at your computer workstation is good for your health.

Many of us spend countless hours each day in front of our computers sending emails, conducting research, and staying on top of the latest news from around the world- while giving little, if any, thought to our own posture and comfort while doing so. The repetitive use of the computer and improper posture can lead to fatigue, eye strain, and even more serious injuries.  Ergonomic assessments of employees commonly reveal that back aches, carpal tunnel syndrome, and the higher presence of work place errors are just a few of the symptoms that occur when proper computer workstation posture is not followed.

Key components of an ergonomic friendly workstation

Achieving correct ergonomic posture is impossible unless the proper workstation environment is created. Proper computer ergonomics means having both a comfortable and efficient workstation, including a chair, keyboard, desk, mouse, and of course computer that are designed and/or positioned for each individuals needs.

Having a chair that is angled and adjustable is necessary to alleviate back pain and stress. Use the adjustment features to achieve the best alignment for your spine and workspace but make sure that you aren't slouching. Armrests should not hinder your ability to move about your workstation, but provide a place to rest your arms, specifically your elbows. Also make sure that your feet rest comfortably on the floor or on the chair’s footrest.

Your keyboard and mouse should be positioned in a way that ensures that your wrists remain straight and flat and your elbows stay close to your body. Keep your monitor and keyboard centered to avoid excessive strain and twisting. The top of your monitor should be at eye level, and the entire monitor should be at least 25 inches from your eyes, which is about the length of your arms.

The use of monitor arms, keyboard and document trays, mouse rests, and other adjustable tools are highly advisable in achieving correct ergonomics posture.
